Fire Box 33-81 was dispatched at 1015 hours on Tuesday, March 28th for a dwelling fire in the 1900 block of E. Oliver Street in the Broadway-East neighborhood of east Baltimore. Companies arrived and found heavy smoke and fire from several vacant two-story brick dwellings that was rapidly spreading to the adjacent houses in the rear. Battalion Chief 2 arrived and called for a working fire assignment. A second alarm was sounded about ten minutes later. Shortly after arrival there was a collapse of the second floor in the original fire building in the rear. A total of five houses were involved, three of them vacant and two occupied.
A family of five, along with their dog escaped their home next to the fire building without injury. One of the family members reported to police that they saw a man jump from one of the vacant homes. He was found seriously injured on the sidewalk and transported to the hospital. It was unclear if he was involved with setting the fire or was just squatting in one of the vacant houses. One firefighter also suffered a minor injury on the scene.
It took over an hour to bring the blaze under control and FIB along with Baltimore Police were on the scene to investigate the cause.
