At around 1000 hours on Monday, January 13, 2025 a building fire was reported in the area of Peninsula Drive and McComas Street in the Port Covington area of south Baltimore. Port Covington is one of the biggest current development projects in the country in the midst of a multi-year transformation that will turn this former industrial hub into a giant retail area with housing, hotel accommodations, entertainment, green space and waterfront parks.
Units arrived on the scene in the 2500 block of Peninsula Drive and found a block-long, four story building under construction with one unit fully involved in fire from the ground to the roof. Squad 26 arrived in front and immediately deployed their deck gun knocking down most of the visible fire in the all-wood constructed structure, preventing the fire from spreading to the rest of the eight unit building. A second alarm was called for immediately on arrival and units positioned in the rear also knocked down the heavy fire from their vantage point. While battling the fire crews remained exterior operations as the roof and top floor of the unit collapsed into the interior and the walls were bowed out. Interior walls between each unit were partially covered with sheetrock which also prevented horizontal spread of the fire to the other adjacent units.
Companies worked for about an hour with ladder pipes and handlines to bring the fire under control and mop up remaining hot spots.
No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
