On December 30, 2015 at 0709 hours Baltimore County Dispatch alerted Second Battalion companies for Box Area 37-1 for an electrical fire in a warehouse in the 3300 block of Hollins Ferry Road a few blocks south of the Baltimore County/City line. The one story building is owned by Merritt Properties and the section involved is occupied by the Diehl Moving and Storage Company.
Engine 5 from Halethorpe arrived first on scene and reported heavy smoke showing from both sides of the building. When the first units arrived and forced the loading dock doors they found heavy fire conditions inside. Firefighters started an interior attack on the fire but within 20 minutes fire broke through the roof and a large sign on top of the building collapsed into the interior. Units were then evacuated and companies went to master stream operations. Ladder pipes and portable monitor pipes were set up at each side of the involved unit. Command requested a second alarm at 0742 hours. Units continued to pour water into the fire and around 0830 a special call was requested for 2 more engines to set up an additional water supply, followed minutes later for three more engines. Mutual aid responded from Anne Arundel County, Howard County, BWI Airport and Baltimore City.
75 firefighters with 20 pieces of equipment brought the fire under control at around 1030 and units remained on the scene for the rest of the day tearing apart and wetting down hot spots. The Building Inspector was requested to the scene and FID responded to determine the cause.
