Around 0440 hours on May 5, 2022 a dwelling fire was reported in the 2400 block of West North Avenue in the Coppin Heights neighborhood. Units arrived on the scene and found heavy fire in the upper floors of a 3-story vacant rowhouse extending to the exposures on both sides. Due to the poor conditions of the houses exterior operations were ordered.
Due to problems with water pressure in the area a second alarm was requested. Companies used ladder pipes in the front and rear to control the blaze. The fire was placed under control in about two hours.
Neighbors had reported that a homeless man lived in the building. While conducting a secondary search around 0800 a body was found on the second floor. Due to the fire damage and deteriorated condition of the building the Special Operations Team was called to the scene to shore up the building and recover the body. Tower 1 was out of service and Tower 2 from Ellicott City in Howard County was special called to assist with the recovery operations.
There were no injuries to firefighters and Fire Investigation was called to determine the cause as well as investigate the death of the body discovered.
