On May 30, 2014 around 2:00PM Engine 41 was dispatched to the area of Lombard and Oldham Streets to investigate smoke in the area. They arrived to find a vacant 50’ X 100’ 1-story warehouse with heavy smoke showing in the whole area. The rest of the box assignment was struck out. The building sits on a limited access dead-end street with limited hydrants in the area. When Battalion Chief 1 arrived he made it a working fire followed quickly by a second alarm requesting companies to find hydrants and bring more water with them.
Companies began an interior attack and found a large pile of debris burning and extending into the roof area above them. At the same time firefighters were on the roof tearing into the thick tarpaper covering to get at the hidden fire.
Because of some long hose lays traffic had to be diverted in the area as some major streets were shut down as well as some ramps onto and from I-95.
The fire was brought under control in an hour and there were no injuries reported. Fire Investigation was also on the scene to determine the cause.
