Around 5:15AM on Sunday, December 22nd Baltimore City Police witnessed 3 people jump into the Patapsco River from an abandoned pier off of the 300 block Cromwell Street near Port Covington in South Baltimore and notified the Coast Guard. The Baltimore Fire Department responded and rescued a 24 year old woman clinging to the pier. She was taken by the Fire Rescue Boat across the river to a boat landing ramp next to Harbor Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital where she was examined and treated and listed in fair condition. Through a Spanish language interpreter she reported that two men that were with her, aged 24 and 27, were still in the water and missing.
Divers from the Baltimore Police Department and Anne Arundel County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to begin search and recovery operations. The Maryland State Police helicopter also responded and scanned the area from above the river with their infra red camera to try to locate the victims.
Severe thunderstorms were predicted to enter the Baltimore area around 8:00AM, threatening the search. The storm skirted the area and only produced light to moderate rain as the search continued after daybreak.
The first body was recovered around 9:00AM and taken by Fire Rescue Boat 1 to the boat ramp where they were met by the State Medical Examiner. The crews continued the search using side sonar equipment aboard the Fire Rescue Boat. They located and recovered the second body around 11:30AM and removed him to the Medical Examiner also.
The Baltimore City Police Homicide unit and the U. S. Coast Guard are investigating the incident.
