On March 19, 2012 public funeral services were held for 48 year old Robert J. Marchanti II, an Army National Guard Major, at the Trinity Assembly of God Church in Lutherville.
Major Marchanti and Lt. Col. John D. Loftis of Kentucky were shot to death in Kabul, Afghanistan inside the National Police Coordination Center where they were helping to train the Afghan National Police. This happened amid the violent unrest that followed the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base in the country.
A military service was held on March 9th at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore where 500 National Guard members gathered to honor the Major Marchanti.
Marchanti is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Leah, twin sons Jonah and Ian, and another son Aaron, who is a firefighter with the Baltimore City Fire Department, assigned to Truck Company 1. In a show of support for the family about 50 firefighters and officers from the Oldtown Station, where Aaron is assigned, along with the Fire Department Color Guard were present. A lone bagpiper also led the funeral procession into the church.
After the services the family was led outside of the church where several doves were released into the air by his children as a commemoration of his life. When the services concluded the Patriot Guard motorcyclists led the procession back to the Evans Funeral Home in Parkville.
The next day Major Marchanti was taken in a very large procession to the Arlington National Cemetery where he was buried with full military honors.
