On the evening of July 4th Box Alarm 4-1 was dispatched at 2228 hours for a dwelling fire in the 3900 block of Lowndes Avenue located in the Waverly section of Baltimore near the former Memorial Stadium site.
Firefighters arrived and found a vacant 2 ½ story frame house fully involved and collapsing to the ground. Battalion Chief 4 struck out a second alarm on his arrival and companies began to set up ladder pipes and handlines to protect the adjacent exposures on both sides.
Fire did get into the top floor of the side D exposure and crews entered 3940 Lowndes Ave. to contain and extinguish the fire. The heat from the fire melted the siding off of both houses on either side of the fire building.
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and a half before the fire was declared under control. The original dwelling was a total loss and extensive damage was done to both houses on either side.
Fire investigation was on the scene to determine the cause. There were no injuries reported.
