Right around shift change in the early morning of April 22, 2016 Fire Box 44-10 was dispatched for a report of a dwelling fire at 101 Longwood Road in the historic section of Roland Park. Engine 44 and Truck 25 rolled into the scene of a 100’ X 120’ 2 ½ story frame single family dwelling with heavy fire showing on side C spreading rapidly to side B. Truck 25 took Command while Engine 44’s crew took a hand line through the front door where they encountered heavy smoke banked down to the floor. As Engine 21 arrived their officer requested the second alarm. When Battalion Chief 5 arrived he took over Command and ordered an evacuation and companies began a defensive mode as the fire was now spreading up over the roof and into the attic.
Large trees around the house somewhat hampered efforts in placing ladder pipes and a large in-ground swimming pool right outside the back door hampered access in the rear. Large master streams and monitor pipes poured water into the building as the fire travelled into the attic above the second floor. Truck 25 and 16’s ladder pipes eventually knocked the roof fire down and crews were able to reenter the house to pull ceilings down and get to the hidden fire. The fire was placed under control around 0830.
The two adults and three children along with the family dog were able to escape the blaze before the arrival of the Fire Department. No injuries were reported and damages were placed at $150,000 to the house and $75,000 to the contents.
