On April 10, 2012 graduation ceremonies were held at the Frank J. Trenner Fire Academy for Class 11-04. The Baltimore City Fire Department welcomed 41 new EMT/Firefighters to the ranks. Three members of the U. S. Coast Guard, stationed in Curtis Bay, also went through the course and graduated with them.
The ceremony was well attended by the Fire Department command staff, honored guests, family, friends and coworkers. Among the speakers was Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
The Baltimore City Honor Guard opened the ceremony with the presentation of colors. PIO Kevin Cartwright then introduced the speakers along with the other elected officials present. Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Chief James Clack, and Director of Training, Paul Moore then offered their comments and words of encouragement to the graduating class.
The Firefighters’ Oath of Office was then given by Chief Clack to the group followed by the presentation of graduation certificates and badges on stage. Some of the graduates received their badges from family members or friends that are members in the fire service now or have since retired. Chief Clack also announced where each new EMT/FF would be assigned. U. S. Coast Guard Chief Dennis Amerson presented the graduation certificates to his three men.
Several graduates also received special achievement awards for excelling or improving in different categories.
For six months these trainees have put in more than 1000 hours into firefighting and EMS training and met the professional requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services, and the Baltimore City Fire Department. The recruits obtained cognitive and psychomotor skills in fundamentals of Firefighting, emergency care, emergency vehicle operations, and hazardous materials operations. All of the recruits graduated with their EMT-Basic certification or Paramedic licenses.
Their training involved numerous hours of classroom lecture, theory, and hands-on practical evolutions to prepare them for the day to day challenges of a Baltimore City Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter.
The new recruits basked in the pomp and circumstance given to them and were proud and excited to join the ranks as the newest members of the Baltimore City Fire Department.
