On February 2, 2021 at 1141 hours, County and Volunteer units in the south western section of Baltimore County, were alerted for an apartment building fire on Springridge Court, in Windsor Mill.
First units on scene reported a three story apartment building with fire showing on the second and third floors. The complex had five attached buildings with a common attic. Command requested a second alarm and had crews perform primary searches that proved to be negative. Within a short period of time the fire broke through the roof and ran unchecked into the attic area of all five buildings. Command requested a third alarm. Crews made an attempt to attack the fire through the interior, several times, but were withdrawn by Command as the fire spread through the attic space of all five buildings. Master streams along with aerial ladders were placed in service and were able to bring the fire under control so crews could reenter the buildings.
Crews had some frozen hydrants to contend with initially. The fire destroyed the upper floors and the roofs of the structures. As a result of the fire all 30 units of the complex were either damaged or destroyed.
Investigators determined the cause to be a chimney exhaust system malfunction. There were 45 fire units on the scene along with 150personnel. There were no injuries to any citizen or firefighters. Loss at this time is unknown.
