On February 8th around 2:30 PM firefighters responded to a house fire in the 5700 block of Highgate Drive in northwest Baltimore, just north of Pimlico Race Track. When they arrived they encountered heavy smoke from the front and fire blowing out of the first floor side and rear of the single family frame dwelling.
They entered the first floor and knocked down the fire in a short time. When firefighters went down into the basement they found a 32 year-old deceased woman who appeared to have been beaten and was bound with electrical tape and wire. Police Arson and Homicide detectives were called to the scene when other evidence of a crime was discovered in a first floor bedroom.
The victim’s car was reported missing by neighbors to police and they broadcast a description of it. The following morning a suspect was taken into custody in west Baltimore. He was found driving the victim’s car and had blood stains on his clothing.
He was subsequently charged with her murder as well as robbery, arson, and related charges in her death and was held without bail.
The victim was an employee of the Baltimore City Health Department where she had worked since 2008. Her neighbors said she had just bought the house and moved into it a few months ago.
