On Saturday, August 5, 2023 Box Alarm 14-61 was dispatched at 1347 hours for a reported dwelling fire in the 2100 block of Ramsay Street in the Carrollton Ridge neighborhood of southwest Baltimore. The block is dotted with occupied homes as well as multiple vacant houses throughout. Units arrived on the scene with heavy smoke showing from a 2-story rowhouse, reportedly vacant. They immediately made entry and found an unconscious wheelchair-bound man on the first floor in cardiac arrest, also suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. He was put in the Medic Unit and revived by the crew and was transported to the hospital where he remained in critical condition until he died the following day.
Units in the rear had heavy fire conditions extending to the second floor and roof, and to the exposures on both sides. Companies continued to battle the blaze and when it had gotten into the walls and roof of the adjacent buildings a second alarm was requested along with several special calls in between. Due to the extreme heat and humidity that day a third alarm was requested at 1427 to bring in fresh crews to relieve those on the scene. The fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes.
Companies remained on the scene for several hours opening up hot spots in several dwellings while investigators searched for the cause of the fire. No other injuries were reported.
