Around 1630 hours on September 14, 2021 Fire Box 30-30 was dispatched for a reported dwelling fire in the 400 block of Fonthill Avenue in southwest Baltimore located one block north of the Southwestern District Police station.
A lot of the companies that responded on the first alarm were fill-in units as the normal assigned companies were already out of service on medic assist calls waiting for Medic Units. This accounted for a slight delay in time getting to the scene by those companies.
The first arriving units encountered a 2-story frame dwelling, connected but set back from the adjacent units on both sides. Heavy fire was issuing from the second floor and through the roof impinging on both side exposures. Battalion Chief 3 arrived and assumed command, quickly upgrading to a working fire and second alarm due to a possible common cockloft and the frame construction.
All of the residents escaped safely and the fire was declared under control within a half hour. There was one firefighter transported with a minor injury. Fire Investigation was also called to the scene to find a cause of the fire.
