On September 23, 2015, (C Shift) Box Alarm 7-51 was sounded for a possible structure fire with explosion in the 12000 block of Sleepy Horse Lane. Units from stations 7, 10, 2, 9, 5, EMS2, S1, BC2 and 1 responded. Units arrived on the scene to find evidence of a large explosion with multiple townhouses on fire. A Task Force followed closely by the second and third alarms. Units went to work stretching lines and performing search and rescue of the structures.
It would take close to 100 emergency responders to bring the situation under control and included mutual aid from Montgomery and Anne Arundel Counties. There were two people injured(one citizen and one BGE employee) who were transported to area hospitals. The Howard County Fire and Police Departments would maintain a presence on the scene for close to 48 hours after the initial incident performing an investigation and security of the scene and street. Fire Rescue Investigators worked with BGE to determine the cause of the gas explosion.
