In the hot and humid afternoon of June 10, 2017 Carroll County companies were alerted for a reported house fire in the 100 block Springdale Avenue in New Windsor. It was initially reported from the next-door neighbor to be a porch fire in the rear of the one-story single-family rancher.
While enroute Chief 10-1 Moser requested the Rapid Intervention Team be added to the call due to a large column of black smoke showing in that area. Within three minutes units from the New Windsor VFD along with companies from Union Bridge, Westminster, Pleasant Valley and Winfield were arriving on the scene and encountered heavy fire conditions coming from the rear and an open end garage involving several automobiles and rapidly moving towards the interior of the main house. Units, under the command of New Windsor Chief Tom Coe, immediately made an aggressive interior attack on the fire through the garage side and front of the house with several hand lines cutting off the rapidly moving fire. Several explosions occurred early on intensifying the fire. These were later found to be propane tanks and home oxygen cylinders. Within 15 minutes the fire was declared under control. Units remained on the scene for several more hours checking hidden spaces for hot spots and overhauling. Three automobiles in the garage were damaged and had to be pulled out to get at the remaining fire inside and between the cars inside the garage.
Six residents along with three dogs were home at the time and escaped without injury, however one civilian was transported to the hospital from the scene. No firefighters were reported injured.
About 60 firefighters battled the blaze. Red Cross was on the scene to assist the displaced residents and a loss of $150,000 was reported. The Office of the State Fire Marshal was also on the scene to determine the cause
