Around 1900 hours on June 10, 2016 fire broke out on the roof of a 2 ½ story single family dwelling located at 2704 Queen Anne Road in the Windsor Hills section of west Baltimore. The fire was discovered shortly after a roofing contractor had finished their work for the day tearing off the old roof, preparing for a new roof. When firefighters arrived they found the whole roof fully involved and extending into the attic area through dormer windows on the front and rear side of the roof.
The home belongs to Firefighter Charles Washington, Jr., a 29 year veteran assigned to Truck 18 at the Walbrook Station, who was off duty at the time of the fire. The first units to arrive at the scene were Engine 20 and Truck 18 and happened to be the same shift of firefighters that Washington works with.
Battalion Chief 5, Mark Ruff, arrived and made it a working fire at 1923 hours. Companies made their way to the roof via ground ladders and Truck 18’s aerial ladder and knocked the fire down with handlines. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. There were no injuries reported.
There was extreme damage to the roof and attic area and water damage throughout the rest of the house. The members of the Walbrook Station have set up a fund to raise money for Firefighter Washington and his family as they recover from this disaster.
