On Saturday, June 17, 2023 at around 1011 hours Fire Communications sent out Rescue 1 and Medic 4 to investigate an accident at Paca and Mulberry Streets in downtown Baltimore, just a few blocks north of the Steadman Station. Once on location they found a car that had been struck by an MTA bus at the intersection and the MTA bus had crashed into a building after colliding with another car farther up the street at 501 W. Franklin St. Another Medic unit and EMS Officer were immediately dispatched to the scene. Several minutes later a Level 1, Mass Casualty Incident was established and a full rescue assignment was dispatched.
The bus had hit the corner of a 4-story apartment building and penetrated several feet inside. The bus driver managed to free himself from the seat and was found outside with several other passengers. A total of 17 people were injured, including 5 that were taken to the Shock Trauma Center. Of those five, two had possible life-threatening injuries and were admitted. The other injured passengers were assessed and treated on the street in front of the bus and were transported to several local hospitals as additional medics arrived on the scene.
At 1026 additional Special Operations units were dispatched to the scene to shore up and inspect the damaged building. The building was initially evacuated as the investigation continued. It was later determined that only the first level was damaged and the upper floors remained intact. After everyone was triaged and removed to area hospitals Baltimore City Police along with the Maryland Transit Authority Police remained on the scene to investigate the accident.
