Around 3:40 PM on June 7, 2011 a fire was reported in the vacant Garrison Woods apartment complex in the 2900 block of Garrison Blvd at Grantley Road in northwest Baltimore. When units arrived they found heavy fire and smoke in a three-story brick vacant apartment building. The whole complex was enclosed within a locked chain link fence. As units forced entry into the parking lot a working fire assignment was requested. As they started battling this fire smoke and fire was spotted from another building on the north end of the parking lot. A second alarm was struck out and ladder pipes and monitor pipes were used in the exterior operations of both buildings involved.
It was extremely hot and humid on this day and it was taking a toll on the firefighters. A third alarm was struck out about 30 minutes later to bring additional manpower to relieve the first two alarms.
Both fires were brought under control in about an hour. No injuries were reported but a few firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.
