Around 1430 hours on Saturday, March 9th Fire Box 5-71 was dispatched for a reported building fire at Broadway and East Pratt Street in the Butchers Hill area of east Baltimore. First due Truck 3 was not dispatched on the box but was clearing a run a block away and requested permission to respond. They arrived on the scene and reported a 2-story vacant bar with heavy smoke showing throughout the L-shaped commercial structure.
Battalion Chief 1 arrived and took Command requesting a working fire assignment at 1444 hours. Crews began an interior attack and reported heavy fire on the second floor and into the roof area. Crews were ordered to evacuate and start exterior operations. After heavy fire was blowing out of the second floor front windows a second alarm was struck out at 1450 hours.
The fire was brought under control in an hour and FIB was on the scene to investigate the cause. The building was placarded to be auctioned off and housed the former “Rumba Bar”. No injuries were reported and traffic in the area was tied up for the next few hours.
