On Wednesday, April 21, 2021 around 1530 hours Fire Communications dispatched Fire Box 52-1 for a reported dwelling fire at Reisterstown Road and Westbury Avenue in the Mondawmin section of northwest Baltimore. When units arrived the found the rear porches of three 3-story dwellings fully involved. A stiff 24 mph wind was blowing that day and as companies were setting up for an attack the wind whipped the fire up onto the roof and set it ablaze. It continued across the 3 rooftops. Battalion Chief 3, Mike Rudasill, in Command special called several more engines and a truck within several minutes before calling for a working fire.
When firefighters made their way to the roof the wind was gusting ferociously across the rooftop making it difficult for them to get at the fire which now gained headway under the roof and front cornices. Companies went to the inside and pulled the ceilings on the third floor to check for any inside extension. Command requested the second alarm at 1544 and another special call for 3 more engines and another truck company.
Some embers blew down into the next block onto the rooftop and started a small fire there. Some of the units on the scene took some handlines down there and quickly extinguished it before it took off.
It took about and hour to bring the fire under control and Fire Investigation was called to find out the cause. No injuries were reported.
