At around 3:00PM on October 10, 2016 Box Alarm 14-50 was dispatched for a report of a dwelling fire in the area of Fulton and Wilkens Avenues in southwest Baltimore. Responding units could see heavy smoke in that general area. When Engine 14 arrived they were confronted with 3 3-story vacant dwellings in the 400 block of S. Fulton Ave., with the center one fully involved. They initially set up for an exterior attack in the front. In the rear there was heavy fire extending to adjacent wooden fencing and wooden summer kitchens attached to the houses. The fire began to travel to the rear of a one story connected store and a 2 story occupied dwelling next to that around the corner on Wilkens Avenue.
When Battalion Chief 3 arrived he took command and made it a working fire, quickly followed by a second alarm. Fifteen minutes later he special called two more engines and the Water Tower. Units with blitz lines and ladder pipes knocked down the bulk of the fire allowing firefighters to gain entry to finally extinguish the blaze and check the adjacent buildings for extension.
The fire was brought under control within an hour. There were no injuries reported. Units remained on the scene for several hours mopping up and overhauling while Fire Investigation searched for the cause of the fire.
