Around 10:00PM on March 20, 2014 a fire was reported in the 5800 block of Ivy League Drive in the Catonsville area of Baltimore County. As Medic 355 from the Arbutus VFD was nearing the scene they reported heavy fire showing from the area. When Truck 13, from Westview, arrived on the scene they reported a 2 ½ story townhouse fully involved and requested a second alarm. This brought additional units along with mutual aid from Howard County. Crews evacuated the residents from the adjacent units and initiated defensive exterior operations. The bulk of the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes using master streams and ladder pipes.
A gas leak was discovered within the destroyed building while crews were wetting down hot spots and BGE crews were dispatched. They were on the scene well into the morning hours locating the leak and digging up the front lawn to shut the line down.
The fire was brought under control within an hour and no injuries were reported. Two families were displaced by the fire and the original end unit was totally destroyed.
