Right around 0700 hours on August 27, 2021 Fire Communications began receiving frantic 911 calls reporting the rear porches of several houses on fire and possible people trapped inside of those homes in the 1500 block of West Fairmount Avenue in the Union Square section of west Baltimore.
Units arrived and found heavy fire in the rear of eight 3-story houses on the south side of the block with limited access to the rear. Initially an interior attack and search was started. But within several minutes fire was showing from the second and third floors of several houses in the front as well as heavy smoke from the cornices and roof so everyone was evacuated. Every house was occupied and connected by a common cockloft above the third floor ceilings.
Within minutes of arrival Battalion Chief 3 took command and made it a working fire and struck out the second and third alarms. Fairmount Avenue is a very narrow alley street and only a few pieces of apparatus could position themselves in front of the buildings. Ladder pipes and monitor pipes were ordered along with large blitz lines until the fire could be knocked down. All of the ground ladders and hose lines were hand carried to the front and rear of the involved houses.
This was another hot and humid 100 degree day and a fourth alarm was requested at 0737 hours along with several special calls to bring more manpower to relieve crews and help fight the blaze. Ladder pipes were covering the scene from all sides as the fire eventually broke through the roof. The fire was brought under control in two hours.
At least 25 people were displaced and two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One cat was also rescued from the fire. Fire Investigation was called to determine the cause.
