Around 1:30PM companies were dispatched for a fire in a single family dwelling at 111 Kentucky Avenue in the Lake Shore area of the county. It was first reported as a porch fire. As units were responding Fire Alarm was receiving several more calls reporting that the fire was spreading to the rest of the house. When firefighters arrived they had a large 2-story home at the end of a dead end street well involved in fire. There were heavy wind gusts blowing this day and embers from the fire were blowing onto the adjacent properties setting fires to the grass. Residents were using garden hoses on their yards to protect the houses until firefighters could establish a water supply and begin getting water on to the blaze.
There are limited hydrants in the community and when Battalion Chief 2 arrived he asked for a second alarm along with tankers and began setting up portable water tanks about a half mile away. Tankers arrived and began to shuttle water to supply water to the scene.
Engine 101 and Quint 30 were first to arrive and made an initial knock on the fire with their monitor and ladder pipes until a good water supply was established. Handlines also surrounded the house and the fire was controlled in about 45 minutes.
A third alarm was pulled for more manpower and water resources. About 70 firefighters were on the scene. When the fire was out the house was declared a total loss.
No injuries were reported and the County Fire Marshal was called to determine the cause
