Another fatal fire struck Baltimore City on September 28, 2011. A 78 year old man and his 80 year old wife were the latest victims of this early morning fire. Around 4:30 AM 911 Operators received a call from the man stating that his house was on fire and he and his wife were trapped in the bedroom. The smoke detector had alerted them.
Firefighters arrived at the 1 ½ story split level house in the 2800 block Mohawk Avenue and found the first floor living room fully involved and blowing out of the front. After knocking the fire and gaining entry they found that there were security bars on the bedroom windows and door that led to the roof of an adjoining garage. The victims were overcome by the smoke and couldn’t make it out. One victim was declared dead at the scene and the other was transported to Saini Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Both victims were retired Baltimore City School principals and long time well-respected residents of the community.
The fire was controlled in an hour. Fire Investigators were on the scene and called in the State Fire Marshal with a dog to assist in finding the cause of the fire.
These 2 fatalities brought the total to 12 fire deaths this year in the City.
