On August 26, 2012 at 7:43 PM fire box 30-11 was dispatched for a reported building fire in the vicinity of Frederick and Augusta Avenues in southwest Baltimore. When companies arrived they encountered heavy smoke conditions in the area for several blocks before locating a 3-story frame building housing apartments above a carry-out food store on the first floor at 4011 Frederick Avenue. As firefighters made their way into the building Battalion Chief 3 requested a working fire followed by a second alarm at 7:58 PM.
Battalion Chief 6 took command of the rear where three civilians were rescued from the building and taken to local hospitals, one of which was transported to Shock Trauma for smoke inhalation.
The fire was found in the rear of the building and found its way into the walls and ceiling travelling to the upper floors. At one point all of the visible fire and smoke was knocked down and it was thought to have been under control when fire broke through the roof. A third alarm was then pulled, an hour after the initial alarm, and additional companies came in to pull layers of built up ceilings and walls to get at the hidden pockets of fire.
One firefighter was injured with burns to his face and taken to Bayview Burn Center and later released.
A fourth alarm was struck out at 9:10 to bring in fresh crews to help with opening up the interior and overhauling.
The fire was brought under control in 2 hours and Fire Investigators were at the scene to determine the cause.
